Reduce stress to increase happiness

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 4:11 by David Morrison

I have written articles to help those who care for you manage their stress. Now its your turn! The holidays are meant to be happy and fun. However, holiday stress affects everyone, but people with disabilities can suffer even more because of the daily stress they live with. To reduce stress, eating nutritiously and taking the time to exercise are the two most important things one can do for oneself. Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to begin thinking about you again. Take a walk.

Find some type of recreational activity that you enjoy and get out there and participate. Wilmington has many opportunities available. Check out the Wilmington Family YMCA’s physability program which offers financial accessibility to those in need.

One way I minimize my own stress is through acupuncture and yoga. The deep breathing and focus on overall health really work for me. I also sometimes take a seated aerobics class and the instructors are wonderful at modifying to meet all levels of ability. For your added relaxation, the Y will be hosting a workshop for stress management on Tuesday January 17, 2012 fro noon-1:30p.m. in the kids gym. Call Dalia Nir 251-9622 ext 246 for details.

Another stress that occurs at this time of year is financial and with the economy as it is, this will be an even bigger factor this year. Be realistic in your expectations and your spending. Living on a fixed income, as many disabled people do, makes added expenses a real area of concern. Be thoughtful in your selections. The best gift is not always the most expensive one.

Try not to wear yourself out doing too many things. Learn to say no. If you are honest in your refusal, people will understand. If you don’t take care of yourself, then you could have an even bigger problem. Asking for help, can be difficult for some, including me, but others are glad to be of use, so let them. Even a small favor, like picking several items up at the grocery can alleviate a trip for you and free up some time to do something else or just to relax.

The best way I have of reducing stress is to help someone else. It makes me feel good and makes me realize that there is always someone out there who has it worse than I do. Find an organization,  give food to the needy, or any of a myriad of ways of thinking of others that exist in this community. To find out more about such groups, consider signing up for the StarNews Conscience Fair February 4th. Visit conscienceonline.com for all the details.

Most of all remember to count the positives in your life. As always, Thanks for reading!
